i bought this book to trying to find a comprehensive guide to the new river gorge hiking trails and was blown away. the book is very well organized and extremely detailed but easy enough for a beginner to grasp. i chose the bridge trail as my first hike and the book laid out the whole hike elevations, what to expect on the trail, multiple access routes to the trail head, and all twists and turns of the trail (and i didn't get lost!!!), even described combinations with other trails to extend my hike!!! the book not only is a trail guide but gives insight into some restaurants in the gorge area, mountain biking action, history of the gorge and surrounding area, even details about bird watching and planning your gorge adventure. i could go on and on about the great pictures and fantastic topo maps ....this book is a must have for anyone hiking the new river gorge expert or beginner.Product details

I'm a novice hiker and purchased this guide book because I was impressed with the amazing photos, organization of the book, and level of detail about each trail. Its informative and easy to use. I enjoy reading about the different trails and as a result, am learning about hiking. I think that hikers of all levels would benefit from having this Trail User's Guide in their backpack.
This is the absolute most complete trail guide I have ever read. It is fantastic! There are color photos for every trail and so many details. My favorite part is the "Trail Milestones" with their exact locations. There are so many good features such as trail combinations and the history and culture. It is full of fascinating facts. I would love for the author, R. Bryan Simon, to do a trail guide for the Roanoke Valley!
Just got back from Fayetteville WV and this guide book was critical to finding the best trails. Nice descriptions and maps for each trail.
This guide covers all of the trails in the New River Gorge and the surrounding state parks and is a great resource for anyone visiting the area. The color photos are great and each trail includes detailed descriptions of the trails, how to find them, interesting historical facts, and points of interest. The appendices are great too as they list all the things to do in and around the area (restaurants, adventure companies, and lodging) making it great even if you only hike only a few of the trails. This guide has 119 trails with symbols that help you pick one that suits your interests (and ability!) Highly recommend -- great book to use with kids too.
It is a book specifically written about the trails in the New River Gorge. It is what is says it is. The information and maps are easy to read and informative
